The Honorable Jerry Takanian
Las Vegas, NV – MMHR was able to observe Championship Saturday at the 2nd Annual Jerry Tarkanian Classic hosted by Bishop Gorman High School.
As a former AAU, high school, and junior college coach, Jerry Tarkanian has influenced my coaching philosophy and style like no other coach. From trying to run his famed “amoeba” defense to his exciting fast break offense, Coach Tark is one for the ages.
No one is more deserving of a basketball tournament named after him than Coach Jerry Tarkanian. With 32 teams in attendance from all over the country gathered in Las Vegas, the games played on Championship Saturday gave a crystal ball look into the the Class of 2016 and 2017.
THEM SHELDON HIGH BOYS
Sheldon High School out of Sacramento, CA has a young and exciting team. They played Central Catholic Saturday and won a close game 58-53. Sheldon was led by 3 sophomores and 1 freshman.
Ian Miller(2016), 6’6″ wing, is a sharp shooter. If he is left open, count it. Ian hit a rare 4 point play. He has a quick release, elevates on his jump shot, and moves well without the ball. He finished with 10 points.
Isaiah Brooks(2016), 6’1″ combo guard, is a tough as nails player. He is a good ball handler with both hands. Isaiah penetrates and kicks the ball out well. Also, he has a nice midrange game. Ian finished with 8 points.
Devin Greene(2016), 5’10” combo guard, is a great leader and communicator on the floor. He is very aggressive on defense and penetrating to the basket. Devin has a strong right hand. He needs to work on his left. Devin has good vision and makes good passes. He is an average shooter. Devin finished with 11 points.
Elishja Duplechan(2017), 5’10” point guard, is the personification of poise. This freshman is as cool as ice. He is a strong ball handler with his right and left hand. Elishja has great court vision which allows him to throw pinpoint passes to open teammates. Also, unlike most freshman, he is a good on ball defender. Elishja finished with 9 points.
